One of the most distinctive and instantly recognizable birds of the region, the Hoopoe is another flamboyant favourite amongst our local birdlife. It can be quiet and unobtrusive feeding on the floor or in the shade of a grove but bursts into vivid life in flight, revealing a dazzling pattern of black and white. Largely migratory over much of its European range the Hoopoe is resident in Southern Spain all year. It prefers open woodland, parks, gardens and orchards, with some short grass or bare areas for foraging worms and insects.
