Day off work today, headed up onto the campo above the village to research birding routes and we weren't disappointed...
Within minutes of reaching higher ground had really clear views of a Woodchat Shrike, the first sighting of this summer migrant this year, its black and white plumage and chestnut brown head instantly recognizable. Perched typically in the open on top of a bush, waiting for prey on the ground below. Driving on up the hill we quickly added a Southern Grey Shrike to the day's list, the first time I'd seen this year-long resident this season, and had really good views as it flew between treetops a short distance away. Fantastic to see the two species in such a short period of time!
Crested Larks were present in some numbers, along with the usual tits and finches. Glimpses of an elusive warbler proved to be of great interest...finally identified a Spectacled Warbler, my first ever sighting of this seasonal visitor and a great addition to the day.
Drove on through changing habitat, stopping for a while in a stand of conifers, where we found a Short-toed Treecreeper. On the drive back we found a Lesser Lestrel which showed well from its treetop perch. As we travelled back down through the dry scrub we finished the day with nice views of a Black-eared Wheatear. A male, back from its sub-Saharan wintering grounds, in striking summer plumage and the first I've seen this year. It's still only March and with three first sightings of summer migrants in one day it can only bode well for the summer!
