Butterflys - Parnassius Apollo, Silver Studded Blue or Idas Blue

11/06/2009 15:40

Whilst out walking in the Poqueira Gorge in the Sierra Nevada and found this butterfly. It is either a Silver Studded Blue or an Idas Blue!! Only one way to tell the difference and that is by a looking at its ankle with a magnifying glass, hmmmm. The Idas Blue has a limited distribution in Southern Spain but is found in the Sierra Nevada.

This caterpillar was found whilst going up Mulhacen (3482m). Turns out its a rare butterfly and very much protected and is endemic to the Sierra Nevada. It is a Parnassius Apollo and turns into this beautiful butterfly.
